By Myyen Au

A comedy, or a clever marketing campaign for Google?

The Internship, at times, bordered on the line of one giant commercial promoting the greatness of Google. Google was well advertised throughout for being the worlds fastest, most reliable search engine and one of the world’s best workplaces. And although we did get the memo on how awesome it is, the movie itself wasn’t quite advanced.

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson team up once again almost a decade after the success of The Wedding Crashers. Billy (Vaughn, who was also a writer and producer) and Nick (Wilson) are 40-something year old salesmen who become victims of the advancing digital age, as their watch company folds. Jobless, lacking skill and out of touch, the duo score surprising internship positions at Google Headquarters in hope of earning full time roles.

The film fails to live up to the success of Vaughn’s previous projects, namely Wedding Crashers and Dodgeball. Watching the duo navigate through their internship was like trying to teach my grandpa how to operate an iPad: impossible. Littered with stereotypical nerd and geek jokes it was awkward at best. I found myself bombarded as the two talked far too much, supplying heavily scripted cringe worthy gags and cheesy catch lines. To put it simply, this comedy was just not funny; in fact, the number of times where the audience cracked out into laughter could be counted on one hand. To pile on the misery, The Internship had those cliché themes of teamwork, corny romance and the underdogs coming out on top.

Lively performances by up and comers Dylan O’brien and Max Minghella as young intelligent college students competing for the same vacancy provide as rare highlights. I have to give it to Google though; one of the world’s smartest companies played a great hand in advertising itself. Nearly every aspect of the successful company was displayed for all to admire, overshadowing the lacklustre performances and the mediocre storyline of the actual movie. Unlike Chrome and Gmail bugs, The Internship is as broken and unfixable as Owen Wilson’s nose. Which reminds me I’ve got to Google how it came to be that way!

Tune in for the Between You & Me show from 10pm till midnight and find out some interesting things about virtual relationships!

Our virtual life on social networks becomes more and more intense with every day, and I’ll tell you a secret: sometimes it looks even better, more bright and more interesting than in real life. The Internet allows us to communicate with a huge number of people at the same time, despite the distance!

You can be on the other side of the planet and it won’t have any effect on your communication with friends – you can talk to them during the whole day and stay busy.

On the Internet we maintain the connection with our friends almost non-stop. We find new connections and friends, and sometimes even find a new love! As you remember, my girlfriend Natalie had this kind of situation. At first it was just innocent flirting with a stranger online. It was pretty fun to talk to the stranger and to flirt with him, but her boyfriend of course didn’t like that, and now they have a very complicated period.

Do you need virtual relationships if you already have real ones? If you have already found your true love? Why do you want to find new and complicated relationships, even as a joke, if your Prince Charming is here and you love him?

Live a real life here and now! Cherish and take care of your True Love!

P.S. To find out more about relationships, love and other interesting situations in life, listen in to the Between You & Me show with Katrina, on Tuesday 18th at 10pm!

By Liana Gangi

The highly anticipated film of year, The Great Gatsby, has been praised for its outstanding actors, engulfing set, dazzling costumes and smooth transition from book to screen. However, the music has generating more dazzled hype than ever, with Lana Del Ray gaining the title of the soundtrack’s sultriest singer with the track Young and Beautiful.

Like Gatsby, upcoming artist Lana Del Rey’s music creates an air of expectation before it is released. After being discovered on YouTube in her home-produced music video to her first track Video Games, Del Rey became an Internet sensation not only for her sultry voice and unique music style, but her characterised fashion, self described as ‘gangster Nancy Sinatra’ and, of course, her famous lip pout that has helped her land a UK Vogue cover shoot before her debut album Born to Die was even released.

Any dedicated Lana Del Rey fan, and believe me, there is a growing fan base out there, would know that after her first album, Lizzie Grant underwent a change – both her musical and fashion style, as well as creating a dreamy, glamorous Miami summer time stage name: Lana Del Rey.

Despite claims that the character of Lana Del Rey is a manufactured character, it is the ability to perform so excellently that allows her to sing with such passion and emotion in the Great Gatsby love song, Young and Beautiful.

‘Young and Beautiful’ is the first, key track on the Great Gatsby Soundtrack and has soared to the Top 10 on the iTunes charts. The slow tempo has a haunting and sombre mood to it, with an orchestral sound ringing through the verses. The passionate and emotive tune clashes beautifully with Del Rey’s dreamy vocals, creating a romantic sound for fans of the film. The poetic lyrics mix delightfully with dramatic string instruments and pounding percussion, bringing forward the film’s themes of love, nostalgia, regret and darkness of aging. Despite being used for the 1920’s inspired film, the song is also making sound waves on contemporary radio, proving it truly is a timeless song for all.

To hear the song in its complete glory, check out The Great Gatsby in Cinemas now! But if 3-hour films aren’t your thing, make sure to tune in to Hitz 247 to hear this enchanting new track!

By Myyen Au

2012 was arguably a big year for hip-hop and RNB music with names like The Weekend and Frank Ocean seeing success. It’s no wonder then that Miguel Pimentel, who goes by the mononym Miguel, flew under the radar.

Miguel, an American singer, songwriter and producer, released his debut album All I Want is You Back in 2010, but unfortunately it performed poorly. 2012 would see the release of his second studio album, titled Kaleidoscope Dream. Released in September it was slow to take off, however the critically acclaimed album has gone on to garner Miguel worldwide fame. Admittedly I only discovered this album back in January of this year; coincidently it was around the time his rise to prominence began. Better late than never certainly rings true in this instance.

Kaleidoscope Dream combines a variety of genres from RNB to soul and funk, showcasing Miguel’s versatility and talent. Light on lyrical content and subject matter, it often borders on the line of juvenile eroticism or what some would call sexual poetry. This can be forgiven with all 11 tracks having their own attractive qualities, may it be the seductiveness of “Candles in the Sun” or the captivating rhythm of “Where’s the Fun in Forever” that just makes you want to move! His velvety smooth voice is overwhelming with the number one hit “Adorn” echoing that of Marvin Gaye’s 1982 ballad “Sexual Healing.” Credited with writing and producing much of his work, his talent is undeniable. Electric guitar riffs, drum solos and riveting keyboards compliment his stunning vocals with casual backup appearances from the likes of Alicia Keys.

It’s perplexing how an album so diverse, with each track having its distinctive sounds, can come together and be so unified. With such a well-rounded record it’s difficult to separate the best, but the soulfulness of “Use Me” and the hypnotic sounds of “Do You” provide as highlights.

2013 has seen deserved success for Miguel beginning with a Grammy win for best RNB song. He features on superstar Mariah Carey’s latest track “Beautiful”, which has soared up the charts. Be sure to keep your eyes and ears open for future productions; with such talents his fame is sure to be permanent. Miguel will be hitting Australian shores in early 2014 as support for Bruno Mars on his Moonshine Jungle Tour.

By Nikola Kantarovski

Wow.

Certainly the first word to pop into one’s head after wrapping it around the concept of the revolutionary app – Vyclone. Developed for one purpose, and one purpose alone; to allow anybody and everybody to seamlessly use footage of the same event from different devices and angles to create a professional looking track.

What can be said is that this application fills a niche that nobody knew existed prior to its creation. It is a truly fascinating concept and allows even the most amateur and garish of Smartphone users to create a complex work of art within in minutes.

Does this make an amateur director/editor’s job ten times easier?

It sure does.

Does it herald the end-times when hipsters will finally rule the planet?

Most probably.

The application even boats a community system, one that allows people to create usernames and post up your awesome videos for all the world to see. If ever an amateur needed an avenue to display their work in a published form, Vyclone has now made it easier than ever. The simple, arty colours and contemporary graphic design, coupled with a simplicity that would allow even the most tech-inept to use it, make Vyclone out to be one of the freshest apps on the market.

Being relatively new, the community, and indeed, the app itself, are set to grow exponentially. They have even recently been put on the Play Marketplace’s ‘must watch’ list, a sure sign of success. This app just goes to show that originality at its best can still be found out there in the world of coding, and that one need only look to find new ways of improving their smartphone experience.

It also has a pretty cool comic-type thing at the start, which is fun to read.

Truly an amazing app.

Four stars.

By Mar Borboa

After finding out that they are unable to have children, a couple buries a wooden box containing all the personality traits that they had hoped any child of theirs would have possessed. Soon after, a stormy night brings about the unconventional birth of a son. That is the premise of Disney’s The Odd Life Of Timothy Green.

This life-action, family film follows the tale of Cindy (Jennifer Garner) and Jim Green (aussie Joel Edgerton), as they attempt to prove their worth as parents to an adoption board by telling them about the son they once had – Timothy. However, we soon discover that Timothy was not born under normal circumstances.

After the heartbreak of being told that they won’t be able to have a baby of their own, the Greens accept into their lives a small boy that shows up at their doorstep. Although Timothy sprung right up from the ground, Jim and Cindy cannot help but feel that he is their own – the son they have wished for.

It is a bizarre concept, but somehow it works. Once you get over how implausible it is that no one really investigates, or even questions, the fact that the Greens happen to have a son all of a sudden, the movie becomes quite charming and enjoyable. Timothy is kind, wise and “honest to a fault”, and you cannot help but hope that he will be able to stay with his new parents forever. Yet, once you see that the leaves attached to his legs are falling off one by one, you know this cannot be.

The Odd Life Of Timothy Green seems to have a somewhat strange message, though. It promotes the idea that wishful thinking is all that is needed to get what you want, and that having a kid will solve all of your problems. Also, Timothy seems to be too perfect of a child, and this causes his character to appear a bit unauthentic.

Overall, this whimsical film is entertaining, and filled with lovable characters. It is perfect as a family-night watch.

By Amanda Duckworth

An exploration of love, life, drama, tragedy, drug abuse and misuse, as well as the hysterical and sometimes awkward transportation through adolescence, is something rarely examined in Australian Film and TV.

Amanda Duckworth, from Altona East in Melbourne, aims to remedy this with her latest teen drama, Clique. The show focuses on a group of friends who are in their final years of high school, and the trials and tribulations one must almost ritualistically go through to earn the rites of passage to post-high school freedom.

It’s raw, it’s edgy – there is an element of grunge that has been missed since the days of Heartbreak High, and it aims to encapsulate the time and place where our friends can become enemies in the blink of an eye, whilst love is tumultuous and wild.

What has Clique standing out and already building a considerable fan base is the authenticity and rough-around-the-edges style of the script. This isn’t your Neighbours or Home and Away pastiche of what it’s like to grow up in modern Melbourne; it’s written from the heart of someone who is living and breathing the life of these characters. It has also given ample opportunity for the young acting community of Melbourne to come together and put their efforts behind a show that has a lot to say about the current generation.

Walls are broken and not many punches are pulled – think ‘Skins’ geared to an Australian audience. It seems ludicrous that this hasn’t been thought of before, but that is exactly the point. It takes an individual to inspire and lead a group of others, and have them assist in realising a vision, and Amanda Duckworth has done exactly that. While we live in an age of instant gratification and an obsession with success, there are seldom those who are out there, up on their feet, fighting for what they believe in, artistic or otherwise.

The networks have shown interest and some are on board, but they said not without the backing of a fully-fledged production company. Any smart business will not run something off their own back, especially in Australian TV, so this hurdle seems like it could be the final one for Amanda and her team to overcome, but one that is not impossible. The talent, ambition and passion is there for the taking, all it needs is a professional finishing touch and the rest is history.

Thus, Clique has captured the imagination of a lot of people – it’s a story that wants to be told, not be imposed on others. It’s current, it’s hot, and it will make for some great viewing. The Clique fan page is available for viewing at: www.facebook.com/cliquetvau

By Nikola Kantarovski

Unlike certain arcade games that can be found for free in any Smartphone’s application store, Vector is one that is worth taking the time out to download. Developed by Nekki, Vector has a style and substance all its’ own.

Parkour.

Cool moves.

Great graphics and animation.

What else can be said? This game has everything one would want in an application designed to take the hours away. The game opens with a fantastic cut scene – one which, honestly, is probably the best free thing you can get on any app store anyway; set in a world of desolate sameness, we meet our protagonist.

He rebels, and leaves the system, and so the game begins.

Utilising relatively simple controls, you use your finger to dictate the movements of your freerunner, as he tries to escape the forces of evil. Dazzling and surprisingly genuine moves are used to navigate the platform world, with just enough puzzle-solving to keep you interested the whole way through. The music’s not half bad, and the action is more than half good; this game certainly doesn’t leave you wanting more.

It does, however, cut itself short when it asks you to replay certain levels just to get enough money to buy new moves, so that you can progress. That, and the fact that a lot of features are cut out because of a need to buy the full version.

Admittedly, the small price of 99 cents is more than a worthy price to pay for a game of this calibre. If you can get over the temporary annoyance of having to actually dish out a bit of cash, this game can be more than worth it.

The starting cut scene alone is the breadwinner of the game.

Fun, fresh, invitingly invigorating, and definitely worth your time.

You would think the names Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper would be enough to grab any moviegoer’s attention, but combine that with epic car chases, bank robberies and guns, and you have an enthralling must-see drama. The Place Beyond The Pines, the third film of Derek Cianfrance, unwraps and explores the relationships between two unconnected families whose paths cross through a series of ill-fated events. Teaming up with Gosling (Blue Valentine) once again, Cianfrance produces a riveting movie of three tales, which unfolds over 17 years.

The first act centers on heavily tattooed motorbike stunts man Luke Glatton, played by Gosling. His life is transformed when he discovers he is the father of a 6-month-old boy named Jason, the son of Romina (Eva Mendes), with whom he had a brief fling. In order to stay in his son’s life and provide for his young family Luke gives up his nomadic lifestyle. Teaming up with Robin (Ben Mendelsohn), a rough, drift away repairman, the pair exploit Luke’s riding skills to rob banks. Now obviously a great bank robbery is incomplete without a grand car chase, but unfortunately for Glatton it ends badly, following a botched attempt that leaves him cornered. Gosling provides a strong performance, fearless and unwavering throughout, redeeming himself in the viewer’s eyes. The emotionally charged first hour ends in a cruel and abrupt fashion, setting the tone for the remainder of the film.

Enter the fray Avery Cross (Bradley Cooper), the first officer on scene. The second card follows the life of officer Cross, following his assignment to Glatton’s case. Cooper undoubtedly gives one of the best performances of his career. Accepting accolades that come his way, he secretly struggles to find meaning in his work and home life. Cross’ police force is littered with corruption, abusing their authority. Unable to make a mends, he rats out his force in a deal that sees him become assistant district attorney. But just as his life seems to be back on track, the ghosts of his past come back to haunt him.

The final card played occurs after a substantial amount of time with Cianfrance ambitiously throwing in a time lapse of 15 years. It sees the lives of Jason and AJ, the sons of Glatton and Cross respectively, intertwine. Cross, too self-orientated as he vies to become New York’s attorney general, neglects his son at his own peril. Attending the same high school, AJ and Jason befriend one another, leading them down a spiraling path of parties, drugs and violence and throwing their lives into disarray. When Cross learns of the pair’s acquaintance, he threatens his son and warns him to keep away from Jason. Struggling with his own identity, Jason turns to his mother in search of answers. He distances himself as Romina battles to deny him the facts. Eventually he finds the answers that he’s been seeking and when he learns of Cross’ involvement with his father, things take a turn for the worse. The movie hits a final emotional and suspenseful climax that will leave you on the edge of your seats before drawing to a close.

With fantastic performances all-round, The Place Beyond the Pines is a cinematic masterpiece; a compelling melodrama about responsibility, loss and guilt, filled with rife anticipation and raw drama that’s not to be missed.
